The first few chapters of Letters to a Young ScientistI, have continued to prove what characteristics of a scientists are important, according to scientists themselves. One of the things that stood out right away was that Wilson believed that scientists should put passion first, and that dedication and hard work based on passion will never fail you. From the previous readings this semester, it can be seen just how often passion is a character trait seen in scientists. Passion is an important quality to have when being a scientists. It is what allows scientists to do there work and to achieve, and discover, great things. Wilson agreed with this, and I think that you can see how important passion is just by looking at previous scientists.
Another thing that came up in the reading was that science is organized testable knowledge of the real world of everything around us as well as ourselves. This is very similar to what we, as a class, came up with as what the purpose of science is. Scientists wish to discover the truths of the world, and I believe that Wilson states this exact same thing when stating what science involves. Not only is Wilson’s description of the purpose of science similar to our class answer, it is very similar to what other scientists have had to say about science’s purpose as well. During Dr. Pennock’s research, when scientists were asked the purpose of science they often would say something along the lines of discovering the truths of the world. I find this to be interesting that the purpose of science, and therefore scientists, is the same throughout all different aspects of the scientific community. I think that this shows that not only are scientists similar with their character traits, but they are similar in their beliefs in what science is and should be.
