While reading chapters 5-8 of Einstein, the characteristics that have been seen with other scientists have come up again and again — although not always in the same way. Albert Einstein had a lot of great ideas and figured out a lot of theories, however, for majority of his work he did not actually perform experiments. Einstein would often end his hypotheses by proposing experimental ways that someone else could test his idea. This is very different from both Benjamin Franklin and Barbara McClintock. Franklin and McClintock would both perform experiments and collect data to support whatever hypothesis that they were working on at the time. They wanted to make sure to back up their claims — especially McClintock — so that no on could reject their ideas. Einstein, on the other hand, would only come with the ideas and hypotheses for his work, he never actually would perform the actual experiments to show that his ideas were correct. I find this very strange, especially since many of the scientists that I have learned about, have actually performed the experiments needed for their hypotheses. I think that as a scientist it is not only your duty to discover the truths of the world, but you should also prove those truths through your own data and experimentation.
Another thing that I found interesting while reading, was that Einstein believed that his family took up too much time, and he preferred to work on his theories then be with his family. This is very different from how Charles Darwin lived his life. Darwin was very fond of spending time with his family, and would even set aside time away from his work to be with them. To Darwin, his family was a large part of his life, and he needed and enjoyed having them around. Einstein was the complete opposite; he was someone who would rather work on his scientific research then spend time with his wife and children — although he did enjoy being with his children some of the time. I find this very interesting that some people are not fond of spending time with their family because they believe it takes up too much time. For me, and a lot of other people, family is a big part of life and family is needed to be able to accomplish the goals that we set for ourselves. It is strange how someone can believe they do not need their family, when in reality their family helped them accomplish much of what they have done.
